Whilst the tradition of Thanksgiving Day is American and we don’t often celebrate it outside of the States, we felt that it was appropriate to mark the occasion and pick up the theme of thanksgiving this year on Thursday, 25th November. This is the last week of our tenancy at Hetton Hall and we are inviting everyone connected with the Community to gather with other Companions, Friends and supporters for a Thanksgiving meal, on or near this date. In homes, at other Community Houses, in cafes, restaurants, pubs, halls and hotels ~ wherever! Invite folks to join you for an evening of being together.
If you want a simple format for the evening and ideas for food for a thanksgiving meal Margene has provided some suggestions.
Don’t get bogged down with the detail but gather together and all we would ask is that the evening contains the following key elements:
- Thanksgiving for Hetton Hall and all that it has meant to us and to many thousands who have passed through its doors since 1992.
- That a thank offering is taken and sent to the Community which will go towards the provision of relocating Nether Springs to Acton Home Farm.
- That some of you write and let us know how you went about the venture and what happened. We want to collect lots of stories under the theme of thanksgiving November 2010.
This is a call to the Community to celebrate with Thanksgiving. We look forward to hearing from you and receiving your thank offering in appreciation for God’s grace and goodness to us.
Yours in Christ,
Seniors Leadership Team
Margene writes… Yes. I remember that meal very well. The warmth, love and laughter we all shared that evening will forever be imprinted on my heart.
Here are a few Thanksgiving meal suggestions:
- Turkey – a long standing tradition as the centrepiece of the Thanksgiving meal. Want further direction on cooking a turkey, look here http://whatscookingamerica.net/Poultry/turkeytips.htm.
- Mashed potatoes and gravy
- Cranberries. Either a cranberry sauce or chutney or relish. Why? Because they taste so good with the turkey and fixings.
- Some kind of autumn vegetable, e.g. turnip, sweet potatoes. You can bake, boil or roast them.
- One more vegetable of your choice.
- Then the meal is topped off with pumpkin pie. Here is one recipe http://southernfood.about.com/od/pumpkinpies/r/bl21016d.htm. There are many more available online.
Activities to consider:
- For school aged children, here is a video of how to draw a turkey using your hand. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qdYJmiLV2Q
- For families, find a small tree branch and place in your house. Cut out leaf shaped patterns and place one at each person’s plate. Prior to serving the meal have everyone write down one thing they are thankful for and then attach it to the tree.
- Take time to reflect on the ways the people within the Community have touched you and what memory you can share or way to express your gratitude. Particular memories of time and experiences at Hetton could be shared by any who have been to the Nether Springs.
- Write them down and send your stories, and / or prayers to the new Community Office, Nether Springs, Acton Home Farm, Felton
NE65 9NU.
Bless you Margene
